Steps to Clean Your Carpet and Maintain Its Looks
Carpets come in different shapes and sizes, but
they all have one function – to embellish and beautify the room with its
elegance. And, along with this benefit, you also can enjoy a carpet’s floor
insulating properties and ability to cushion feet while walking on it.
You can easily maintain the sophisticated beauty
of your carpet by following these steps.
Step 1: Vacuum Away
One of the best ways to maintain and clean your carpet
is by vacuuming it regularly. In fact, if you aren’t doing anything, just take
out the vacuum cleaner and run it over the carpet. The more frequently you do
this, the lower the chances of dirt and grime building up on the carpet.
Step 2: Use a Carpet Rake
Invest in a carpet rake. It will help loosen
dirt, especially pet hair that gets stuck to the carpet fibers. It is best to
rake your carpet before vacuuming it. You can pile up larger bits of dirt with
the rake and then run the vacuum to get rid of the finer bits.
Step 3: Tackle Spills Immediately
Spills should be addressed immediately. Don’t
wait for them to dry, or you will have to contend with a stubborn stain.
Instead blot the liquid with paper towels to remove the excess and then use
plain water and lots of paper towels to gently blot the stain. Don’t rub or the
stain will get into the fibers. Use the same tactic to address solid spills,
such as food. Pick up the solids with paper towels carefully and then use water
and paper towels.
Step 4: Refrain from Brushing Solid Spills
A solid spill should never be rubbed or brushed. Use
a blunt knife or spoon to gently scrape the dried spill. Start from the outer
edges of the spill and work inwards. Pick up the scrapings with a paper towel
and discard. Then use water and paper towels to blot the stain. Repeat until
the stain disappears completely. Then dry the wet area of the carpet.
Step 5: Use Cleaning Agents Sparingly
Whether it is water, spot cleaner, carpet shampoo
or mild detergent, always restrict the amount you use. A carpet saturated with
water is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and mold. It also can lead to
shrinkage. On the other hand, spot cleaners, shampoos and detergents leave
behind residue that are harmful and also attract more dirt. Make sure you rinse
the cleaners thoroughly from the carpet and then dry it completely. Drying can
be done by running the fan and keeping windows open. Airing the carpet in the
sun can also do the trick.
Step 6: Opt for Professional Carpet Cleaning
You should be looking
to get your carpet cleaned at least twice a year by a professional. This will
rejuvenate your carpet and get rid of dirt, grime and stains you miss.
Professional carpet cleaning will extend the life of your carpet, as well. Today,
there are many carpet cleaning companies that use eco-friendly cleaning
products. You should be looking to use their services to minimize your carbon
footprint.
